Software companies sometimes reinvent their products. For example, Adobe did that with their page layout application PageMaker and today ships InDesign. This was largely due to Quark entering the market and recognizing their customers were needing more than a computerized version of the old pasteboard and X-acto knife. Quark offered the extensibility of automation, workflows and database integration that took their customers to the next level—sort of a Page Layout 2.0.
