Office 2011 applications fail to work with volumes named ‘home’

Office for Mac 2011 users may experience a problem when attempting to access documents on file shares or local hard drives simply named “home” (all lower case). This issue affects Excel, PowerPoint and Word. Outlook for Mac, which only supports locally stored identities, is not affected.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD Service Pack 2 (SP2) 14.2.0. This update contains problems that were fixed in 14.2.1. You can go directly from 14.1.0 or higher to 14.2.1. SKIP the 14.2.0 updater. [Added May 3, 2012]

If you get the following error “Your identity is older than this version of Outlook” you will need to revert to Office 2011 v14.1.4 in order to repair your identity.

Office 12.1.3 update breaks sending Exchange meeting invitations

MacBU released its Office 12.1.3 updater last Tuesday and by October 16 nearly two dozen users in the Microsoft Entourage newsgroup were beginning to report that they are unable to send meeting invitations.

The specific error message is Unexpected data was encountered with Error: -17997.

Version required not found

Install/Update Errors

Update version numbering 12.1.0 and 12.0.1 are apparently confusing some users trying to update to Office for Mac SP1 via Mactopia Downloads.

If you receive this error, be sure you have downloaded the correct updater.

You cannot install Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume.

All will be fine if you make sure that . . .
