Office 2008 users on a PowerPC (PPC) running Tiger (10.4.xx ) that applied the Microsoft Office 12.2.7 updater might need to do this fix in order for the Microsoft AutoUpdater (MAU) to work correctly.
Locate this folder: Library/Application Support/Microsoft
Option 1: If you have not installed 12.2.8 updater….
Remove the MAU and MERP folder (just trash them), and then run the 12.2.8 update. They will get the correct version of MAU and MERP. Restart . . .

The Microsoft Autoupdater (MAU) for Office 2008 is now tucked out of view of Spotlight. In the past the Microsoft AutoUpdater could be found at the root level of the Application folder. If you are using both Office 2004 and Office 2008 you will need both updaters. Neither will be able to see the other’s updates. Confusion is rampant over (1) updating the AutoUpdater (MAU), (2) the updater for Office 2008 12.0.1 not showing up in the MAU, and (3) Entourage still showing as 12.0.0 after updating.

Microsoft released an update to the Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) application in preparation for future updates to Office 2008. The MAU update uses a VISE installer, however the plan is for future updates to Office 2008 to be in Apple PackageMaker format for easier admin install.
It is critical that you update. MAU will not tell you about any future updates unless you first install this update to MAU itself.
