Office 2008 applications will open with a new window after the upgrade to Mavericks. While it’s not a show stopper to close the window, it seems to greatly annoy some users.
The fix is NOT to launch from the Dock. Launch directly from Applications or use a launcher. You can even put an alias on your Desktop to launch.

Office for Mac 2008 and 2011 are both compatible with OS X 10.9.0 Mavericks. Some users have no issues while others are having minor issues and a few users are having major issues. If you have not upgraded, I suggest you wait until 10.9.1 or 10.9.2 is released.

Effective April 9, Microsoft Office for Mac 2008 will be end-of-lifed according to Microsoft’s published lifecycle policy. This is in accordance with its history of supporting each version of Office for Mac for five or more years.
Microsoft stopped adding features to Office 2008 after its 12.2.9 update, which included support for SkyDrive and enhancements for SharePoint users. In the past two years it has released half a dozen updates focussed solely on security issues . . .

Microsoft has released the Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.3.2 Update. (285 MB) This one update includes the 17 prior updates 12.1.1 through 12.3.1.
According to the update’s description it only addresses one new security issue.
The security issue addressed (MS11-094) corrects a remote code execution vulnerability across both Windows and Mac versions of Office. It does not state, however, whether Macs are indeed vulnerable to these attacks.
Users should quit all Office applications . . .

If you do a fresh install of Lion or need to re-install Microsoft Office 2008 at a future time, users that have an original DVD version 12.0.0 of Microsoft Office 2008 can install on Lion, but will need to do an additional step after installing from the DVD. Until this step is complete, Office 2008 cannot see any future updates. If you have Office 2008 v12.1.0 or later there are no special instructions.

Microsoft has released the 12.3.0 Update for Office 2008 (333.1MB). This update includes all the improvements that were released in all previous Office 2008 updates.

Office 2008 users on a PowerPC (PPC) running Tiger (10.4.xx ) that applied the Microsoft Office 12.2.7 updater might need to do this fix in order for the Microsoft AutoUpdater (MAU) to work correctly.
Locate this folder: Library/Application Support/Microsoft
Option 1: If you have not installed 12.2.8 updater….
Remove the MAU and MERP folder (just trash them), and then run the 12.2.8 update. They will get the correct version of MAU and MERP. Restart . . .
