Microsoft stopped adding features to Office 2008 after its 12.2.9 update, which included support for SkyDrive and enhancements for SharePoint users. In the past two years it has released half a dozen updates focussed solely on security issues and bug fixes.

By William Smith | December 13, 2011 Microsoft has released the Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.3.2 Update. (285 MB) This one update includes the 17 prior updates 12.1.1 through 12.3.1.
According to the update’s description it only addresses one new security issue.
The security issue addressed (MS11-094) corrects a remote code execution vulnerability across both Windows and Mac versions of Office. It does not state, however, whether Macs are indeed vulnerable to these attacks.

By Diane Ross | July 27, 2011 If you do a fresh install of Lion or need to re-install Microsoft Office 2008 at a future time, users that have an original DVD version 12.0.0 of Microsoft Office 2008 can install on Lion, but will need to do an additional step after installing from the DVD. Until this step is complete, Office 2008 cannot see any future updates. If you have Office 2008 v12.1.0 or later there are no special instructions.

By Diane Ross | December 26, 2010 Office 2008 users on a PowerPC (PPC) running Tiger (10.4.xx ) that applied the Microsoft Office 12.2.7 updater might need to do this fix in order for the Microsoft AutoUpdater (MAU) to work correctly.
Locate this folder: Library/Application Support/Microsoft
Option 1: If you have not installed 12.2.8 updater….
