Microsoft releases Office for Mac 2011 14.3.7 Update

Microsoft has released the Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 14.3.7 Update. (119 MB) Installation requires first installing the cumulative 14.1.0 (SP1) update. According to the new update’s description it addresses one security issue and fixes for Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. Outlook includes four fixes for screen reader software and five new menu items.

The update addresses three vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office for Mac, the most severe of which could allow remote code execution by creating specially crafted Excel files to gain the same user rights as the current user. Access gained under a standard OS X user account would impact the computer less than access gained under an administrative OS X user account.

Additional fixes include:

  • Excel – Fixes a crashing issue when opening an Excel file containing several drop-down macros.
  • Outlook – Fixes an issue where certain elements in the navigation pane and message list were unreadable by screen reader software.
  • Outlook – Fixes an issue where certain message and meeting elements as well as composing were inaccessible to screen reader software.
  • Outlook  – Fixes an issue where Free/Busy information in the Scheduling Assistant was inaccessible to screen reader software.
  • Outlook  – Fixes an issue where certain account information was inaccessible to screen reader software.
  • Outlook  – Fixes an issue where buttons within search results of the Contacts Search window were inaccessible by the keyboard.
  • Outlook – Adds two menu items to the View menu. The Arrange By sub-menu now includes Oldest on Top and Newest on Top sort orders.
  • Outlook  – Adds two menu items to the View menu. It now includes Previous Pane and Next Pane menu items along with keyboard shortcuts for navigating between the Navigation pane, Reading pane and Outlook item list.
  • Outlook  – Adds an Insert Image menu item to the Format menu to select pictures to place into messages.
  • PowerPoint – Fixes a crashing issue when opening a PowerPoint file from a SharePoint site.

Users should quit all Office applications and web browsers prior to updating. This update is also available via the Microsoft AutoUpdate application. Select Check for Updates from the Help menu. It is also available for immediate download.

Have real problems with 14.3.7 update. I install and then repeat check for updates and magically 14.3.7 re-appears as needing installation. Have gone through this process several times now with the same outcome. No error messages appear indicating failure to successfully install.

It is as if the update is not being recognising by Microsoft’s AutoUpdate. This is really annoying as I do not know if the “vulnerabilities” have been addressed or not

    • It’s possible the updater is seeing another copy of Microsoft Office on your computer or external drive that needs updating
Have you restarted your computer since updating?

In the Finder, go to Applications. Put in Column view. Select each app and verify that it’s 14.3.7. Next, in the Office folder inside Microsoft Office 2011 look for the Microsoft Component Plugin.framework and do a Get Info on this file. If it’s 14.3.7 you are updated.
