Microsoft has released the Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.3.6 Update. (210 MB) This one update includes all prior updates but still requires the 12.3.5 update be applied first.
Information on Microsoft’s site is confusing. This update supposedly addresses a single issue, which is a vulnerability in Outlook 2008 for Mac, which doesn’t exist. Customers should presume this instead means Entourage 2008 for Mac. The vulnerability could allow for Internet-based images to download without the customer’s consent, thus alerting the site the message has been received and viewed. Also, this may be a combo update that includes all prior updates or it may be a delta update that requires the 12.3.5 update be applied first. Microsoft’s information is conflicting.
Users should quit all Office applications and web browsers prior to updating. This update is also available via the Microsoft AutoUpdate application. Select Check for Updates from the Help menu. It is also available for immediate download.
Additionally, the Entourage 2008, Web Services Edition update has been updated to 13.1.6. This update should only be applied after installing the Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.3.6 Update and if connecting to an Exchange 2007 server running Service Pack 1 with Rollup 4 or later. This update is not needed if already running Entourage 2008, Web Services Edition.
Unless Microsoft releases another update next month, the 12.3.6 and 13.1.6 updates will be the last for Office for Mac 2008. The product’s support life cycle officially ends April 9.
