Updates available for Office 2004, Office 2008, Office 2011 and Open XML

It’s update Tuesday. Microsoft released the following updaters today. Download directly from the links provided or use Auto Update to download. There is no uninstaller so I suggest that you have a backup of the Microsoft Office for Mac folder in Applications or zip the folder in case you want to revert.

**If you have already installed the Web Services Edition, the 14.1.3 updater will update Entourage to 13.1.1. You only need this installer if you are upgrading Entourage for the first time to Web Services Edition.

If you have downloaded the updater from Microsoft Downloads
  1. Download updater.
  2. Log out of your User under the Apple in the Menu bar.
  3. Hold down the Shift key when logging in. This disables all login items including the hidden ones.
  4. Select the updater and install.
  5. RESTART
If you want to use the Microsoft Autoupdater (MAU), follow these steps:
  1. Open any Office application and select “Check for Updates” under Help in the Menu bar.
  2. Once MAU is launched, select “Keep in Dock”
  3. Log out/in as described above.
  4. Select the MAU in the Dock and download the updater.
  5. After it downloads, quit the MAU then install.
  6. RESTART

Reminder: It’s required that you quit all browsers when updating Office 2011. More info Loggin out/in with Shift key will disable all browsers and processes that need to be quit before updating.

Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 14.1.3 Update

This update fixes critical issues and also helps to improve security. It includes fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer’s memory with malicious code. For more information about this update, please visit the Microsoft Web site. This update requires 14.1 to be installed.

This update also upgrades your Identity.

In the future, if you re-install Office, you will need to upgrade to 14.1.3 or later or you’ll get this error. “This Identity Cannot Be Opened With This Version of Outlook“. This message means any Identity saved with a newer version will not open in an earlier version. Once you upgrade to 14.1.3 or later, the Identity will open.

Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.3.1 Update

This is a combo updater. It requires 12.1.0 to be installed and includes all previous updaters released after 12.1.0. It’s 333.0 MB. In addition to security updates it includes:

  • Help works in all languages for Microsoft Word
  • Time zone information is updated for Microsoft Entourage

Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac, Web Services Edition (13.1.1)

The Web Services Edition is for Entourage users that are on Exchange 2007 SP1 RU4 or higher. More info If you are on Exchange Server 2003 and earlier you will need to continue using Entourage 2008 v12.

Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac 11.6.5 Update

This update improves security. Microsoft Office 2004 11.6.4 Update must be installed on the computer before you install the Office 2004 for Mac 11.6.5 Update.

Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.2.1

If you are using Office 2008 or Office 2011 you do not need this updater. Open XML Converter lets you convert Open XML files that were created in Office 2008 for Mac or 2007 Microsoft Office system for Windows so that you can open, edit, and save them in earlier versions of Office for Mac. Open XML Converter can convert Word documents, Excel workbooks, and PowerPoint presentations that are in the Open XML Format so that you can open and edit the files in Office 2004 for Mac. You can select to convert and open one file, or convert lots of files.

I’ve been unable to install my Office v. X on my Mac Air with Lion. I get a message saying “You can’t open the application Microsoft Word because PowerPC applications are no longer supported. I tried installing the updater, but that didn’t seem to help. Please tell me how to install. Thank you.

    • Not only cannot you install Office X but Office 2004 will not run under Lion. You’ll need to upgrade to Office 2008 or Office 2011. Your only other option is to move to Apple apps.

Office 2011 H&S Does not contain an email client. If you don’t need Exchange you can get Office 2008 H&S very reasonably from Amazon with free shipping. $89.75 (price can vary slightly)
