Fix for PPC users on Tiger updating Office 2008

Office 2008 users on a PowerPC (PPC) running Tiger (10.4.xx ) that applied the Microsoft Office 12.2.7 updater might need to do this fix in order for the Microsoft AutoUpdater (MAU) to work correctly.

Locate this folder:  Library/Application Support/Microsoft

Option 1: If you have not installed 12.2.8 updater….

Remove the MAU and MERP folder (just trash them), and then run the 12.2.8 update. They will get the correct version of  MAU and MERP. Restart after updating!

Option 2: If you have already installed the 12.2.8 updater…

Delete the MAU and MERP folder and then install the Open XML File Format Converter for Mac 1.1.8. You don’t need the converters because you are running Office 2008, but that will install the proper MAU  client.  Restart after updating! You can trash the converter in Applications after installing. In order to get the MERP (Microsoft Error Reporting) you’ll need to re-install Office 2008. Because of the age of Office 2008, reporting errors is not that useful, so I would not bother.

If you don’t know if you have a PPC, check under About this Mac under the Apple in the Menu bar. Make sure you are running the latest version of Tiger!
