Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.2 Update

Microsoft has released the Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.2 Update. This update requires that version 12.1.1 be installed. This is not a combo updater, but it does include a fix for the blocked dialog box in previous updaters that resulted from the Apple Security Update 2008-005 released July 31 for Leopard users. You can read the details in yesterday’s blog article Apple Security Update blocks Microsoft’s update process if you need to install any of the previous updaters.

Features included in this update for Microsoft Entourage are:

  • AppleScript reliability is improved.
  • Stability is improved when you use Microsoft Sync Services.
  • Reliability improved for recurring calendar events.
  • Reliability improved for Entourage for embedded graphics, HTML messages, long hyperlinks
  • The Japanese postal code dictionary is updated.
  • Updated time zone information
  • Reliability improved when establishing a secure connection.**
  • New Junk Mail Filter update.

AppleScript reliability is improved.

This update fixes an issue that prevents Office 2008 applications from running AppleScript scripts from the Script Menu until after the Office 2008 application is restarted.

Stability is improved when you use Microsoft Sync Services. This update fixes the following issues:

  • This update fixes an issue that causes duplications of events and other items in Entourage or iCal.
  • This update fixes an issue that can cause deletion and recreation of all contacts in Entourage or the Apple Address Book when you use Microsoft Sync Services.

Reliability improved for recurring calendar events. This update fixes an issue with Entourage 2008 where a cancelled instance of a recurring meeting is added back to the organizer’s calendar when s/he receives a response from an attendee.
Reliability improved for Entourage. This update fixes an issue that causes the following behavior in Entourage 2008:

  • Embedded graphics or images are not displayed correctly in messages when you read or view them.
  • HTML e-mail messages display as a blank message.
  • In Entourage 2008 SP1, some of the characters following the ampersand (&) sign in a hyperlink are truncated.

The Japanese postal code dictionary is updated. The Japanese postal dictionary is updated with the latest information as of May 2008.
Updated time zone information. This update provides updated time zone information.
Reliability improved when establishing a secure connection. This update fixes an issue in Entourage 2008 SP1 that caused Entourage to establish SSL connections to invalid hosts. The following alert displays when an invalid connection is established:

Unable to establish a secure connection to because the server name of IP address does not match the name or IP address on the server’s certificate. If you continue, the information you view and send will be encrypted, but will not be secure.

**Note! I’m still seeing this error after updating. I will report back if I hear more on this “fix.”
New Junk Mail Filter update. This update includes a new Junk E-mail Protection definition file.

Update Tips

  • Read the directions!
  • Quit all applications that are running, including virus-protection applications, all Office applications, Microsoft Messenger for Mac, and Office Notifications, because they might interfere with installation. Easy way to quit all: Log out/in from your User’s account.
  • Before updating Office, I suggest archiving (zip) your Office folder or making a duplicate. There is no way to easily revert to a previous version after updating.
  • If you have moved Office from the root Application folder or modified Office in any way, see this page for help.
  • Restart your machine (sometimes the temp folder where the update wants to write to is locked, restarting your machine clears the temp folder and rectifies this problem)
  • Make sure that the user account you use to authenticate the update installer is an administrator account.
  • Make sure that you downloaded the correct language version of the update for your copy of Office.
  • Restart after updating!

I just completed the upgrade to 12.1.2 and I am getting a Microsoft Sync Services error every 15 seconds. I read it was more stable but now it appears worse than ever.
    Any suggestions?

when will they fix the Entourage 2008 problem with leopard?
i have had enough of “Unable to establish a secure connection…”
This update did not fix it for me.

  • Diane Ross

I’m working with Microsoft now to see why the fix did not work for some uses. It happened to me too. I’ll post the results as soon as I can.

  • Diane Ross

Yours is the first for this error. Exactly what is the error saying?

  • Diane Ross

Found out why I got the update. I installed Office on a volume called “Leopard.” I used SuperDuper! to make a sandbox volume and it copied my Office folder to that volume. Most of my applications are aliased back to Leopard.
Because I had a second copy of office located at /Volumes/Leopard/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/ – and I had not updated it yet to 12.1.2, I’m receiving the error.
MAU looked at my first location, and said no update needed here. Then it looked at my second location and saw that it needed an update. Thus the cause for the update to be listed.
    Here is how MAU works…

    1. MAU is activated (manually or when the timer goes off if you have it set for automatically)
    2. MAU looks in the com.microsoft.autoupdate2.plist file to see what you have installed (you can open it up and see what you have listed installed – each app that registers with MAU puts its location, version, and language in the file)
    3. Then MAU checks up at the server (off microsoft.com) to see if there are any updates for the applications you have.
    4. When it finds that there is a match (an app you have and an app that needs an update), then it asks the server what is the trigger mechanism for the update.
    5. With the trigger mechanism (we use the version of Microsoft Component Plugin), it checks the location the app said it was installed and sees if the trigger matches the requirements. If so, then it pulls down the update.

I have v12.1.1. installed, but when I try to update to 12.1.2 I get a message saying that it cannot install in my mac volume because a copy of Microsoft Office hasn’t been found in my computer. I’ve read this has happened to other people but is there a work around for it?
    Thank you

  • Diane Ross

Make sure you have downloaded the correct version. Did you download from Mactopia or did you use AutoUpdate?
For help with this error is you downloaded the correct version but still can’t update…

I’ve done a limited roll-out of 12.1.2 and I am also still getting the certificate error. So fix yet!

  • Diane Ross

First, please keep in mind this blog is peer-to-peer. There isn’t much we can do. The best way is to send feedback to Microsoft .
When working in Office, you can use the “Send Feedback” option under the Help menu in all of the Office applications.

First, follow the 5 basic steps here: Troubleshooting Basics.
If you still experience the problem, then we need to determine if it’s your Identity or corruption in your User’s folder.
    Eliminate your User’s folder:
    1) Move your Microsoft User Data folder to the Shared folder.
    2) Go to System Preferences –> Create a New User in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User Switching.
    3) Drag your Microsoft User Data folder from Shared to the new Documents folder. (it copies rather than move so your data is safe.)
    4) Open Entourage and test.
If the problem goes away then it’s a corrupt preference file in your regular Users folder. If the problem does not go away, then log out/in to your regular Users folder.
    1) Move your Microsoft User Data folder back to your Documents folder.
    2) Open Entourage and select to “Switch Identities” and create a new user. Call it test.
    3) Make the selections there. Do they stick?
If yes, then it’s your Identity, you need to rebuild. Let me know what these test show.

Hi Diane….I saw from a previous post that you were having problems on forwarding graphics in emails. I have just moved to a Mac from a Windows based machine and this is driving me crazy. Does the latest update of Entourage sort out this problem?
    Please help……
    FRUSTRATED

I just bought Office 2008 for mac. Prior to updating, it worked fine. Then, when I downloaded all of the updates, including this last one, the programs won’t open. What happens is, when I try to open word, excel, or powerpoint, is that “Microsoft Office Setup Assistant” opens. After I get through the two steps there, “Microsoft Autoupdate” opens. But Word never opens. Every single time I try, I get the setup assistant.
I uninstalled and reinstalled office. Again, prior to updating, it worked. Post-updating, I arrived at the same problem as before.
    Thoughts?

When you forward complex HTML in Entourage you need to use “Forward as Attachment.”
Some users are having problems with sending .jpg file. You can get around that by saving as .gif. I’m not sure exactly what comment you are referring to as me having problems. To troubleshoot a problem like this, it’s best to ask on the Entourage newsgroup. How to subscribe to the MSFT newsgroups

About the only thing I can tell from this is that Sync Services was somehow involved. It takes a developer to read these logs.
Often rebooting your computer will clear the problem. Applying the latest Apple combo often will fix problems too. If you continue to have problems, you need to ask on the newsgroup which is a better forum for support help. Be sure to give details of what was happening when the crash occurred.

I’m not sure you would want to resort to resetting Sync Services until you get further advice.

Entourage is working fine however I have it connected to my Yahoo name so I no longer have to log in though Yahoo. However, I can not receive messages into my Entourage account, it still only goes to my Yahoo account, and a box pops up saying the Yahoo server returned to the error [AUTH] and my password may be incorrect, when i know it is not.

  • Diane Ross

Is this a paid Yahoo account? You cannot download a free Yahoo account via with another Email Client.
If yes, see this page for help setting up your account.

    Hi Diane,
I have Entourage 2004 and am extremely frustrated because I can’t forward emails embedded with HTML in the format that they’re in without Entourage converting it to text. I have read that the only way to do this is to Forward As an Attachment or Redirect, however neither of those options give me the opportunity to edit the body of email I intend to forward.
So I was thinking perhaps this issue has been resolved in Entourage 2008. But in your response to Erin’s similar question above, you provided her with the same solution; one that doesn’t allow for editing.
I find it hard to believe there isn’t a way to simply forward an HTML embedded email in Entourage 2004 or 2008 inline with the option of editing the email before sending. Should I just go back to using Outlook on my much-hated PC?

  • Diane Ross

You are the first person to ever ask to edit a complex HTM message. If you can open the HTML in either Word or use a program like GoLive or Dreamweaver to edit that might work.
See this page for some help and links to scripts for sending.

I get the same sync services error. It’s really annoying – any fix yet?

  • Diane Ross

My understanding it has something to do with the certificate. As of SP1, Entourage looks for the AutoDiscover xml file. If you take a look in the Exchange 2007 AutoDiscover whitepaper, you’ll see it uses two URLs to look for the autodiscover xml file. Both URLs are based off your SMTP address in your email address – it doesn’t matter what server you connect to. You can take a look at the AutoDiscover whitepaper here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb332063.aspx
Here is an example for Joe Blow. :-) In this case, all email addresses from Joe’s server end with @blow.net. This means we will connect to autodiscover.blow.net and blow.net looking for the xml file. If Joe’s server happened to host another email domain and gave out email addresses ending in @joesfriends.com, then Entourage would connect to autodiscover.joesfriends.com and joesfriends.com looking for the Autodiscover xml file.
The actual urls that we connect to in this case are: https://autodiscover.blow.net/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml https://blow.net/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml
Since the first one doesn’t exist (no DNS record), we try the second one. But the cert at that the second location does not have “Blow.net” on the cert, thus you get a host name mismatch error and Entourage shows the dialog.
The fix in this case would be to:
    1) Add Blow.net to the cert located at: https://blow.net
    2) Create a DNS record for autodiscover.blow.net and point it at the same server as rapier.blow.net as well as add autodiscover.blow.net to the certificate as well as rapier.blow.net.
Let me know if this helps.

Upgraded to Entourage 12.1.2 … now everytime I edit a calendar event or create a calendar event with invitees the email with invitation (or altering the earlier event) fail in being sent.
    What is going on?
    “Error -17997″
    “Unexpected Data was Encountered”
If I change the account and send it through another SMTP server, the event goes out fine (but cannot be returned to me once people accept the event).

  • Diane Ross

This is the bug in 12.1.3. See all the recent announcements posted here.

Found the possible solution to the Sync Services error -
Turn off All Sync Services in Entourage Preferences, Restart the MAC then Sync Services back on and Restart..
    Seems to work..
