Install Standalone version of Entourage from Exchange Email Provider with the Home & Student Version

Some ISPs provide a standalone version of Entourage to use with their Exchange accounts. For users that have purchased the Home & Student version this presents a problem installing. Joey, a newsgroup member posted these steps that have proven successful for other users.

  1. I removed my current Entourage installation from the system and then rebooted.
  2. I installed the full Office 2008 Suite via DVD (including Entourage; no custom install, just let it run). No reboot.
  3. Once the Office 2008 install completed, I then installed the .dmg of Entourage from my mail provider. Installed without a hitch. Still no reboot.
  4. I then installed Office 2008 SP1, which I had already downloaded from Mactopia. I then rebooted.
  5. Once back up, I installed 12.1.1 and 12.1.2 in succession, both of which I had downloaded the .dmg files as well. I then rebooted.
  6. After the system was back up, I started Entourage without issue. Found my mail, and I am able to send from my Exchange based email addy. I then started up the rest of the Office Suite without issue.

Notes:

  • Be careful that the Microsoft Autoupdater (MAU) is updated to 2..2.0.
  • Always quit all running applications by logging out/in with Shift key down to disable all startup items when installing.
  • I also suggest that once you get the standalone version installed to make a backup copy in case you have to reinstall in the future.

what is the null disk ?

  • Could someone contact me with more information about this standalone Entourage? I’m trying to setup some employees who have Office 2008 Student and Home Edition on Exchange 2003. If my corporate headquarters has a standalone that they got with Exchange or through Assurance Licensing I want to know what exactly I am asking them for.
    Thanks.

First, it’s illegal to use the Home & Student version in a business situation. I’m not sure how they got this from Microsoft to start with. I suggest they contact Assurance Licensing.
We are not an official Microsoft support site. This is peer to peer help.

May I ask how this pertains to installing the standalone version?
Have you tried a google search?

You can NOT install Office SP1 after you have installed Entourage 2008 from your ISP, because the installer from your ISP will remove a file from the Library folder that identifies that Office 2008 has been installed on your volume (disk). So, your post is no good. 🙂

  • Thanks a ton! Worked for me, after wasting a ton of time with this non sense. I think the key is to avoid the Auto Updater.
I installed Office, then standalone Entourage, then SP1 downloaded from mactopia, then most recent update after that 12.1.7, also downloaded from Mactopia. No reboots or anything in between.
Office works, and Entourage is downloading my Exchange box as we speak.
    Thanks again,

  • You really should restart. this clears caches and over time you’ll have better results.

The link above to print the download/installation instructions seems to be broken/outdated. Does anyone have these, or are they basically the same as the instructions at the top of the page?

  • jessica

Will this work in Snow Leopard?

  • I don’t see why it wouldn’t.

Here is what i did – slight changes to instructions and this worked fine.
    1. I had a clean OS no Ms Office Install (not required as long as you follow step 2)
    2. I installed the full Office 2008 Student Suite via DVD (including Entourage; no custom install, just let it run). No reboot.
    3. Once the Office 2008 install completed, I then installed the .dmg of Entourage from my mail provider. Installed without a hitch. Still no reboot.
    4. I then installed Office 2008 Office2008-1220UpdateEN (1210 will not work), which I had already downloaded from Mactopia.
    5. I started Entourage without issue. Selected help menu and Check for Updates
    6. Ran the latest Ms Office Update.(12.2.3) as of Jan 2010
    7. Still No Reboot needed and all works fine with Entourage Exchange and Office Student
    8. Works perfectly after reboot also

    Diane,
I did the above, downloaded legal version of office 2008 (used before on one other computer) from DVD (except i did a custom install and didn’t download entourage). I then downloaded entourage 2008 (business edition) provided by my work email exchange then updated all updates as above until i updated to entourage web services edition. entourage is working fine now with my exchange but my other office apps (word, excel, etc) won’t open and instead direct me to the ‘microsoft office setup assistant’ to the ‘customer experience improvement program’. I have tried to manually delete the plist files to be prompted to re-enter my product id key (from home and student edition) but everytime i do this it does not give me the option to type just manually generates a new key derivative from the one supplied by my email exchange (ie last 5 digits are different). I cannot access word or excel now.
any ideas please Diane? You seem to know most about how entourage in this context
    thanks in advance.

This formula has worked fine for me (so far) after almost 3 days of trying to get the two working together and many reinstalls. I previously had tried to get it to work with entourage web services edition as well (although in slightly different scenario in that I originally did custom install of my home and student edition DVD and left out entourage) but this time I am too nervous to go that extra step for fear of attracting the microsoft office setup assistant on loop again!
has anyone managed to get it working with EWS-1303-EN??
    Please let me know.
    Thanks,

I was able to install Entourage from my Exchange Server over Office Home and Student but I can’t get WSE. I keep getting an error during installing that it can’t find the right previous version. Seems insane that this is so challenging. WSE syncs tasks and I would love this functionailty.
Anyone have ideas on this one?

  • What version do you have installed? Check the Microsoft Component Plugin:
    “/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/MicrosoftComponentPlugin.framework”
Since you upgraded over H&S, you might not have upgraded correctly.
If you have 12.2.1 or higher you should be able to download the EWS installer 13.0.3 and install.
