Old ActiveSync bug now hits iPhone 2.0

Now that the iPhone 2.0 software includes ActiveSync, Entourage 2004 and 2008 users will soon be discovering an ugly bug in their Sent Items folder. An ActiveSync bug makes any message sent through an ActiveSync connection very difficult or impossible to read.

Microsoft knowledgebase article The header information is not displayed in Entourage 2004 for an e-mail message that is sent by using Exchange ActiveSync, last updated in November 2006, does not include Entourage 2008 in its list of affected applications, however, this bug does manifest itself in Entourage 2008.

The KB article also references Exchange Server 2003 as part of the mix for triggering the bug. The ActiveSync problem was fixed in Exchange Server. Strangely, this problem is only visible when viewing Sent messages in Entourage. The same messages will appear normal in other mail applications.

The problem can be reproduced by doing the following:

  1. Compose a new message on an iPhone with the iPhone 2.0 software and send it through an Exchange account.
  2. Note in Entourage or any E-mail application that the received message is legible.

  3. Using Entourage to connect to the same Exchange account, open the Sent Items folder of the account and open the sent message.

Symptoms include the Subject line changing to and the headers appearing in the body of the message. In some cases where the message is much more complex, the body of the message may be completely illegible.
