Fonts increasing in size with each reply-MSFT is listening

Are you experiencing a problem where font sizes increase with each Reply to an email using Entourage 2008? This issue is currently being investigated and in order to gain a better understanding of why/how this is happening, I’d like to encourage everyone who’s seeing this issue to please send Hui Nee Chin (huchin AT microsoft DOT com) more detailed information, especially: See Note.

1. Do you see this with every message with every email correspondent?
2. Do you know what email client your correspondent uses?
3. What font (name and size) do you typically use?
4. Does it occur when you reply, when they reply, or both?

To clarify things, Entourage 2008 now renders and composes using points rather than pixels (as it did in 2004) to improve consistency between Entourage and Safari font display. Due to this change, emails sent between Entourage 2004 and 2008 would have slight discrepancies in font size (fonts in emails sent with Entourage 2004 appear smaller on Entourage 2008 / fonts in emails sent with Entourage 2008 appear larger on Entourage 2004). This is expected behavior and we apologize to those who had been confused by this observation.
Microsoft really does listen.

Note added March 26, 2008.

I would like to encourage everyone who’s seeing this issue and it is not related to Eudora or Dutch settings, to report this on the Entourage newsgroup. Hui Nee regularly checks the newsgroup, and will respond to your posts pretty quickly. This way, when he responds, multiple users benefit.

I recently installed Office 2008 including Entourage on a friend’s brand new Intel iMac computer. I am still using Entourage 2004. When she sends me HTML formatted email it jumps up two point sizes or more. For example when she sends at 10 points it arrives to me at 12 points. If she sends at 14 points it arrives to me at 18 points. We both have the same fonts installed on our respective computers.
Additionally when I send her HTML email, the type sizes seem to remain stable. When I send at 14 points, she reports it arrives at 14 points. We determine this by highlight the text in question for quoting purposes and then checking the size in the new email with the type and size windows in Entourage.
We typical use Lucida Grande, Verdana or Georgia and this problem in mail sent from Entourage 2008 is constant with all three fonts.

  • When using HTML formatted e-mail, the receiver receives my email in a font two sizes larger than is displayed on my screen. I am the person that Kent Ellwin is referring to in his comment about this same problem.

  • I have the same problem on Entourage 2004. The font gets bigger with every time I send and then get the message back, it’s bigger and then if I reply again, it’s bigger again…
I’m a new MAC user so not sure what other info to give

I have the exact same problem plus some of my colleagues to.
In Entourage 2004 I didn’t have this problem but when I upgraded to 2008, the problem started

I was using Entourage 2004 till yesterday, when I moved to 2008… Everyone I send mailed to since I installed 2008 asked if I needed new glasses… Incoming mail is looking fine. We normaly use Verdana 10.

  • I wouldn’t say slight discrepancies. I stopped using Entourage. I’m working on Apple Mail (which i dont’t like at all) till the problem is solved. I need Entourage for business and my e-mails look very stupid now.
Since i moved to office 2008 this problem bothers me. Receivers on a PC get my mail (which i made in 10 points) in 24 points. Since yesterday i got a message from someone who asked me what my message was. He found out later that the font size was decreased to about 1 or 2 points. (Looked like a small line)So the other way round.
I’ve tried different types of fonts etc.
[The only advice I can give is to use plain text or if HTML is needed to attach a Word document to the email.
Please contact Hui Nee Chin with your info.]

This was not even fixed in the 12.0.1 update ? Ridiculous, this is a huge bug. I normally will not sent HTML formatted mail but today I had to because of images I had to insert within the e-mail itself. You definitely look like an idiot when the receivers open your e-mail.

I agree – I’ve upgraded to Office 2008 and now my emails which are composed in 12pt fonts are sent in 14+pt!

After upgrading to 2008 all email I compose (NOT only when replying!) is about 2 points larger. I’ve activated auto-signatures when composing new emails and i use Lucinda Grande 12 pt. normally in Office 2004.
I have to decrease the standard html font (Lucinda) to 9 pts. in 2008 to visualy have the same fontsize when composing, BUT when checking mail on OTHER computers than those with Entourage the fontsize is about 2 or 3 pts. larger!
I now went back to safely using Entourage 2004.

I have also the same problem: When using HTML formatted e-mail, the receiver receives my email in a font two sizes larger than is displayed on my screen.
My workaround: Change the settings in the Entourage preferences | Mail & news preferences | Compose: change here the settings in the “general” part for the mail format, to “Plain Text”.
Please let me know when there is an update available.

Subscribe me for the same problems here… I will try to go back to Entourage 2004, wich didn’t had this stupidity…. Perhaps it had something to do with the Dutch grammar correction?

Switch to an alternative dictionary in Entourage
General Preferences -> Spelling -> Dictionary
That solves the problem. It has something to do with the Dutch dictionary.

We have the exact same problem. The interesting thing is, that it is still happening even though I already changed the general format to “plain text”. As my preference for NOT using relative dates is also not filtering through to the Inbox (use relavive dates box is unticked) I’m beginning to wonder if any changes I make to Preferences are coming through to the programme. Advice much appreciated.

  • Diane Ross

You can’t select what you receive, but when you compose you should be in plain text. Is this not the case? Just to be sure…. you have updated to 12.0.1?
As to the relative dates….I have always had that checked, but just found that unchecking did not change the behavior. I even quit and restarted. Often this is required especially when date & time is involved. I’ll have to do some research on this as Entourage Help has nothing on relative dates.
The best way to check for problems that involves preferences is to create a new User in System Preferences and check Entourage there. You should first test with a new blank Identity. To test anything in your current Identity, drag your “Main” Identity to Shared folder. Drag it to your new MUD folder and either let it overwrite your test Main or rename one. Dragging from Shared actually copies the folder so no worries about damaging contents. Remember to move out of Shared and back to your MUD folder after testing.

New iMac(leopard) with entourage 2008(dutch), sending in plaint text. Spelling set to UK(instead of dutch).
Entourage 2008 entourage 2008 no problem
Entourage 2008 outlook windows increased font size
    Using arial on both occasion.
Apple mail outlook windows no problems at all.
    Any clues?
    Regards
    Emiel

  • Diane Ross

Other than trying English instead of UK, we’ll have to wait on an update to Entourage to see improvements.
Of course, “use plain text” always works. 🙂

I’m a new MAC user, only used for two weeks and 2 days now.
I started using Apple Mail and when i sent a email in size 12 my uncle gets my emails in a size so small a magnifying glass won’t even bring it up readable. For him to be able to read it easily i was using font size 22 (ARIAL by the way) his reply email would be in size 14 which shows up as 19 on Apple Mail (my uncle using Outlook 2007 Windows).
So i thought of getting Office 2008 for Mac seeing it would be Microsoft to Microsoft for email programs (Entourage 2008 to Outlook 2007), but when i sued size 12 it was a size too small so i used 14 and it was a size too big for normal. And when he replied the original email was bigger to what i sent it.
With Entourage I get this stupid message every time i open it saying “Unable to establish a secure connection……” that’s driving me nuts.
i had managed to stop the reply email from making original email coming bigger by changing the dictionary to Australia (making life easier with spelling too) so that is something.

The easiest way to fix this is to stop sending in HTML. Fonts are displayed differently on Mac and PCs. Over the years this has gotten better, but it’s obvious that improvements are still needed.
Compose Messages Preferences can be set for plain text and HTML. The settings for plain text only affect what YOU see and not what the sender receives. The receiver will see the messages with THEIR preferences. When setting plain text, choose what you like. This is a great feature, especially if you like larger fonts for easy viewing. However, the font and size you choose for HTML messages (proportional) do reflect the default font for outgoing HTML mail and is the what recipient will see.
    How to set preferences
The error “Unable to establish a secure connection……” is a known problem. It does not affect sending, it’s just as you said a pain. I expect we will see this fixed shortly.
Cheers and Welcome to Mac! I have a few tips and links posted to help new users here:

I have the same problem with the font issue.
The only way it does not happen is when I send mail with HTML set to off. Then everything is working fine.
Hope MS does solve this problem fsst.
Does anybody know where / how to check if you have the latest version of office 2008 for Mac??

  • Diane Ross

This should be fixed if you are upgraded.
Download this simple script to display the versions of the Office for Mac components. Even if ALL the Office applications aren’t updated each time, the Microsoft Component Plugin, which isn’t an app, will always show the latest update.
    Find Office Version Info
Be sure to get the Office 2008 version.

if i send a mail in font size 24 from oe. while receiver open a mail font size is very big how to solve it pls help me.

  • Diane Ross

What version of Entourage? in Entourage 2008, this problem was improved in SP1. 12.1.1.

  • Reflexx175

I am using the Entourage version in Office 2004. My problem is that when I send an e-mail (I am in a graphics-heavy industry, so really have to send in HTML), and the recipient responds back to me, the type in my original e-mail is much smaller, to the point that if we go back and forth 3 times, I can’t even read my original e-mail.
Please don’t reply “Don’t use HTML as that is not an option.

  • Just to be clear… are you saying the fonts are decreasing in size with each round trip?
Do you know what email client the other parties are using? I’m contacting you off list as well. If you could zip a few examples and send them to me that would be helpful.
